Speechers celebrate successful season

All seven seniors in the Keota Speech program were honored with Outstanding performer awards at the Speech Banquet on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Speech season came to comical close for Keota High students on Wednesday, Feb. 28 inside the Lagos Acres clubhouse for the annual speech banquet, where seniors and performers were recognized for an outstanding season.

Family, friends and students kicked off the evening with a potluck-style banquet, getting their fill of laughs and desserts before Gina Bennett and Mike McNurlen, the Keota Speech Directors, took to center stage to recognize each of their eight speech groups. A full house listened intently as Bennett and McNurlen presented awards and medals to each of their groups one by one. Many had watched these groups perform at home presentations onto State contest, supporting with laughs, some tears and plenty of applause.

“You can’t even express what that means to have this kind of community support,” Bennett said. “It’s the driving force behind our kids’ performances without a doubt. You have to have that energy. To look out and see people beyond parents, grandparents, cheering you on, the excitement just comes naturally. That’s what they needed.”
