Keota Speech Sends Eight Performances to State

Readers Theater: Trey Carlson, Jenna Jaeger, Callie McNurlen, Bailey Sieren, Cooper Sieren, Nolan Verstraete performed “Anna and August.”

Thanks to mother nature, Keota High School Speech competitors were forced to hold in their talent a couple of extra days.

The District Speech Competitions, previously scheduled Saturday, January 19th in Ottumwa, were postponed until the following Monday due to a winter storm that dumped treacherous precipitation over much of the area.

Perhaps it was the community warmth of the previous week that helped the students keep their talent sealed up tight. Local residents, parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins and neighbors filled the Keota High School auditorium to the brim last Thursday evening, January 17th to catch a sneak peek of the planned performances. The abundance of people no doubt contributed to the elevated temperatures of the already warm auditorium. Staff bustled about plugging in fans, while students passed out cold water bottles to the audience in between acts.

Nine times a new group of students took the stage and performed various forms of entertainment. From Improv, to Reader’s Theater, to One-Act plays, the students kept the full auditorium captivated and often laughing.
