Keota girls pick up second win

KEOTA – Playing your peak basketball is what every coach wants as their team gets closer to the postseason. That idea couldn’t be more true for the Keota Eagles, as Jeff Sprouse’s team picked up their second win of the season — their first of 2020 — against Tri-County this past Friday, 31-19.

Offense was hard to come by for both teams. After Sky Weber knocked down two free throws with just under a minute left in the first quarter, Tri-County’s Emma Miover converted a running floater off the glass just before the horn, making it 7-6 Lady Trojans after one quarter.

Keota’s defense came alive in the second quarter, surrendering just three points to TC. While they were making life hard on the Lady Trojans offensively, their own offense showed life. Macie McDonald started the scoring for the quarter with three out of four made free throws. With 4:11 on the clock, Weber knocked down a free-throw line jumper, pushing the Eagles ahead, 11-7. With about a minute remaining in the half, Keota’s leading scorer on the night, Taylor Kindred, scored a layup, making it 13-9 Keota. The hometown Eagles led 16-9 at the break.

Sprouse’s Eagles went through their own cold streak of shooting in the third quarter, scoring just three points after totaling 10 in the second. The lone Keota basket came on a Bailey Sieren feed to Weber, who converted the and-1 layup, plus the free throw, at the 6:33 mark. The Eagles went scoreless the rest of the quarter.
