Eagles Withstand Rally, Edge out Plainsmen

The Keota baseball team looked to return to its winning ways after suffering a pair of losses the week prior. They hosted Belle Plaine on June 17, breaking their loss streak by hanging on late to beat the Plainsmen 5-4.

Keota got their offense going early, getting a couple runs across the plate in the first inning. From there, it would be a battle of defenses most of the way until Belle Plaine got one back in the top of the fifth. Keota would respond with another pair of runs and the lead stayed at three entering the final inning of play.

A last gasp by the Plainsmen would prove to be enough for the time being, tying the game at 4-4 with half an inning to go. Keota managed to keep their composure after seeing their lead diminish, made the most of their final at-bats and avoided extra innings. One final run scored in the bottom of the seventh sealed the win for the Eagles in front of their home fans.

A trio of Eagles had two hits apiece including Carson Sprouse, Austin Waterhouse and Tyler Waterhouse. Austin led the team with two RBIs, while Sprouse and Colten Clarahan added one RBI apiece.

Four Eagles ended up getting reps on the mound with Sprouse picking up the win. Clarahan started the night by pitching 4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits, one run scoring, walked two and struck out five. Sprouse was brought in and pitched the following inning, striking out two with 10 pitches. Luke Hammen and Tyler would combine to finish out the game with four hits, three walks and struck out one.

Keota finished out their week by playing at English Valleys and hosted Sigourney, getting shut out both games.

The Eagles returned to their home field on June 24 when they hosted Tri-County and will finish out their week at Iowa Valley on June 26.
